The proposed research uses a critical political economy and combines insights from economics, history, politics, international relations, development studies, business, and sociology to characterise continuities and ruptures in structures of production and exports in the former Portuguese colonies in Africa.

Biography

Sophie van Huellen is a Senior Lecturer in Development Economics. Her research focus is on primary commodity markets and commodity dependency; financialisation; global commodity chains; macro-financial linkages; international finance, and machine learning applications in economics.

She obtained a BA in Economics, Politics and Philosophy from the University of Erfurt, Germany. She was further trained in economics (MSc and PhD) at SOAS University of London.
