In this dispatch, Bethan Evans draws from the experiences of academics with energy limiting conditions to explore how the marketisation of UK universities impacts staff. Doing so illustrates how the current university landscape not only institutionalises ableism but also functions as an ‘exhaustion economy’, one which frequently demands more energy than workers have to give.

Based on research presented at the ISRF’s fifth Congress in June 2025, the contributions unravel dominant discourses to offer more nuanced understanding of contemporary social, political, and cultural issues.
