Extramural and Internal Research Support in UK HEIs

James Brackley

Initial research questions are as follows.

1. How does a representative UK research university fund research, in both STEM and non-STEM disciplines? This research may be conducted as a case study or studies of internal accounting practices at representative institutions.

2. What are long-term trends in research funding at UK universities, particularly to non-STEM research, over the twenty-five year period running from 2009-2025. Results will be broken down by discipline in both STEM and non-STEM fields. This will include the trend and current status of research funding in the arts and humanities

3. What are long-term trends in instructional funding in non-STEM disciplines, with particular attention to the arts and humanities? This will include capturing enrolment trends in non-STEM courses. What are the interactions between funding for instruction and for research in non-STEM disciplines?

4. What are long-term trends in degree completion of low-income students and students of colour in relation to the aggregate of UK students?
