Planning with Machines: Historical Technologies, Futures of Calculation, and the Political Economy of Planning

This project investigates how empirical and historical planning experiments are shaped and constrained by the technologies available for economic calculation, coordination, and control. Rather than treating planning as a purely theoretical or institutional problem (Groos& Sorg Eds. 2025), the project examines planning as it was actually practised, mediated by concrete technologies such as early input–output (I-O) tables, statistical systems, cybernetic models, analogue and early digital computing, and logistics architectures developed in both civilian and crisis contexts.

Biography

Vinit is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Copenhagen in data science. He is an interdisciplinary researcher, writer and editor based between Copenhagen and Berlin with dozens of peer-reviewed papers and high citation impact. His publication record spans core NLP/ML topics, particularly concerning work on the limitations of language modelling, a core element of contemporary generative models. Alongside this technical output, his research agenda explicitly bridges to societal and political-economy questions around AI — and he is currently positioned within an ERC-linked research environment (Copenhagen Centre for Social Data Science) focused on quantifying AI’s wider impacts in the context of academic research.
