The Political Economy of Low Carbon Energy Transitions

How can we understand and engage with the political economy of a transition to a low carbon global economy? This project brings an innovative interdisciplinary approach to the pressing question of how to accelerate transitions towards a lower carbon economy. With commitments from governments and the private sector falling well short of what is required to avert dangerous climate change, the question of how to accelerate decarbonisation is urgent.

Biography

Peter Newell is a Professor of International Relations at the University of Sussex. His recent research focuses on the political economy of low carbon energy transitions, but he has undertaken research, advocacy and consultancy work on different aspects of climate change for over 30 years. He has worked at the universities of Sussex, Oxford, Warwick and East Anglia in the UK and FLACSO Argentina. His single and co-authored books include Climate for ChangeGoverning Climate ChangeGlobalization and the Environment; Climate CapitalismTransnational Climate Change Governance; Global Green Politics; Power Shift: The Global Political Economy of Energy Transitions, Changing Our Ways: Behaviour Change and the Climate Crisis and States of Transition: From Governing the Environment to Social Transformation.
