Hate speech, legal invisibility, and intersex lives: A community-based study in Italy

With Daniela Crocetti

This community-based project investigates the lived experiences of hate speech among people with Variations of Sex Characteristics (VSC) in Italy. While public debates on gender and sexuality have intensified across Europe, intersex individuals remain largely invisible within legal, political, and scholarly discussions on hate speech and discrimination. Italy currently lacks specific discrimination, hate crime and hate speech legislation explicitly protecting people with VSC, creating a regulatory vacuum that compounds social stigma and institutional neglect.

Biography

Marta Prandelli is a social psychologist whose research examines how institutional practices, social representations and cultural norms shape the lives of people with variations of sex characteristics (VSC), focusing on stigma, epistemic injustice and the politics of bodily recognition. She led the CHRISALIS project as a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow at Dublin City University and is a steering group member of Psychosocial Studies Intersex International (PSI-I).
