Commemorative cityscape: understanding practices of street renaming in European and non-European locations (COCIENEL)

The aim of this project is to develop a new approach of researching ideological power struggles between various stakeholders over the symbolic appropriation of the semiotic fabric of the city. This will be achieved through the application of a mixed-methods approach to four European and four non-European locations. The proposed multi-disciplinary research residential will bring together a number of key scholars to investigate different ways in which urban conurbations instigate, negotiate and make sense of commemorative practices, focusing on street renaming as eight illustrative case studies.

Biography

Małgorzata Fabiszak is a Professor at the Faculty of English, Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, Poland, where she has built a wide-ranging research career at the intersection of cognitive linguistics, metaphor theory, corpus linguistics, and discourse analysis. She holds an MA, PhD, and Habilitation in English Linguistics, all from Poznań, and has received multiple Rector's prizes for both research and teaching.

Her work spans empirical metaphor research, linguistic landscape studies, and the discursive construction of collective memory — including two National Science Centre-funded projects examining memory and identity in the urban environment of Poznań, and a major Beethoven grant (with Prof. Isabelle Buchstaller) on commemorative street renaming in East Germany and Poland from 1916 to 2016. She has presented widely at international conferences across Europe and beyond, and has supervised and examined doctoral dissertations at universities in Poland, the UK, Spain, Australia, and France.
