Bureaucracy, opacity, border violence: (Un)doing secrecy in EU migration management

With a track-record of using Freedom of Information mechanisms, Luděk Stavinoha is perfectly placed to shine a light on the everyday workings of EU ‘border bureaucracies’ such as Frontex and the European Commission. By analysing a large corpus of internal records and interviewing EU officials, transparency activists and journalists, Luděk will illuminate the mundane bureaucratic practices whereby opacity surrounding EU migration policy is enacted and contested at the level of the everyday.

Biography

Ludek Stavinoha is Associate Professor in Media and Global Development at the University of East Anglia.

Ludek's teaching and research interests lie at the intersection of humanitarian communication, political sociology, and critical border studies.

Through collaborations with investigative journalists, he has contributed to investigations for Der SpiegelThe Guardian, Le Monde, and Balkan Insight on surveillance and migration governance across Europe.
