The project provides a new, Africa-centred interdisciplinary method to investigate how people form and maintain legitimate and long-lasting polities. African Polity suggests that these existed in the past and are recoverable in our present.

Biography

Jake Subryan Richards is assistant professor of international history at the London School of Economics and Political Science. He is a historian of the Atlantic world and global history, with interests in legal history, the history of empires, and the African diaspora. Richards is the author of The Bonds of Freedom: Liberated Africans and The End of the Slave Trade (Yale University Press, 2025). He co-curated the exhibition 'Black Atlantic' at the University of Cambridge Museums. Richards is a BBC Radio 3/AHRC New Generation Thinker.
