Defining Neurodiversity-Affirming Space

With Helen Kara & Kate Fox

Neurodiversity-affirming space (NDAS) is a new concept which has not been researched and has no definition. The proposed research would work with neurodivergent people to co-create a functional working definition of NDAS. This would lay the groundwork for research into how and why NDAS works and how it can be created. Such research could inform the way educational institutions, businesses and governments interact with their neurodivergent students, customers, clients and constituents.

Biography

George Watts is a PhD Researcher at Durham University. They are currently undertaking an SGSSS funded PhD Studentship in collaboration with Scottish Autism on 'Understanding experiences of the autistic community for all autistic adults' - looking at how the autistic community may benefit all autistic people (including those with learning disabilities) and exploring barriers to inclusion in the community.

As an autistic self-advocate, George believes in the importance of research which can contribute to both academic knowledge and more practical applications which will improve the lives of autistic people. They are passionate about sharing knowledge through teaching and public speaking. There is a strong need for more autistic academics with the skills to bridge the gaps between the research and autistic communities, an area they have experienced through their role as chair of the steering group for the Playing A/Part project.
