Biography

Dr Ed Kiely is a trans geographer working at the intersection of health geography and feminist political economy. Their research interrogates the relationships between healthcare systems, social inequalities and state violence. How can we reconcile the benefits of organised healthcare with the harms it perpetrates against marginalised groups? Can these systems be redirected towards social justice, or do we need to imagine something else entirely? They have explored these questions through a Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship on racial inequalities in involuntary psychiatric detention (Queen Mary University of London, 2024–27) and an NWO Veni fellowship on gender-affirming healthcare (University of Amsterdam, 2027–30).
