‘Conceptual Engineering in Practice’ Workshop

Conceptual engineering is a relatively new branch of philosophy dedicated to the evaluation and revision of concepts, understood as tools for understanding and navigating a complex reality. The core idea is simple: instead of simply accepting the concepts we have and analysing their content, we should actively work to design better concepts – ones that can profoundly influence habits of thought and behavior, and thereby be instruments for social change.

Biography

Daniel Stanley is Executive Director at non-profit research body the Future Narratives Lab, and Strategy Director at economic development co-operative Stir to Action.

Daniel has worked with campaigns, coalitions, foundations and political parties in the UK and globally to develop strategies for broadening the appeal of alternative social and economic propositions, including seven years leading digital mobilisation agency Small Axe.

Common themes across his work and interests are strategic communications, cultural psychology, narrative and identity – and how all of these can be applied practically to the challenge of improving politics and society.
