Homestay Accommodation for Refugees. Between Solidarity and Inequalities

With Matteo Bassoli

In the wake of Europe's recent refugee influx, notably post-2015 and during the Ukrainian crisis of 2022, a surge of solidarity initiatives has transformed the landscape of refugee accommodation. This project delves into the burgeoning phenomenon of homestay accommodation, a solidarity-driven practice where private homes become sanctuaries for those displaced. Drawing on extant frameworks (Bassoli and Luccioni 2023), our research scrutinizes the variegated practices of homestay accommodation, probing the intersection of private hospitality with the legal and symbolic categorization of refugees.

Biography

Clément Luccioni is Junior Associate Researcher at Université Paris-Est Créteil.

Since 2017, he has been conducting research on the development of solidarity-based housing for exiled individuals in Europe. In his dissertation, he comparse the Paris and Berlin contexts to understand the emergence of a new nonprofit sector dedicated to solidarity, the organization of work within these structures, as well as the trajectories of the "hosted" and the "hosting" individuals and the hospitality relationships that form between them.

The dissertation explores private hospitality in its political dimension (framing of mobilizations, relationship with public authorities, political socialization of actors), social dimension (sociology of nonprofit work, hospitality and inequalities, power relations), and spatial dimension (mapping of “hosting”, sharing of domestic space).

Beyond the dissertation, he has been collaborating with Matteo Bassoli, a researcher at the University of Padua, on the development of an international research field focused on solidarity-based housing in Europe, within the dual context of the 2015 “migration crisis” and the war in Ukraine since 2022. This work includes a multilingual literature review, digital bibliographic tools, the management of a mailing list gathering several dozen researchers, and scientific events.
